Five Reasons to Love Spring
Monday, April 5th, 2010In my adult years, I have come to enjoy flowers. When I lived in Irvine, I would always plant flowers at about this time of year: Impatiens, Begonias, etc. Things are different now. My yard in Texas is considerably more natural and unkempt. And flower gardens tend to become a buffet for the deer. So […]
First Signs of Spring
Monday, March 1st, 2010I’ve seen the first signs of spring in my yard. We’ve had plenty of rain this year, along with unusually cold weather. But a few warm days, with highs in the 60s, have encouraged some wildflowers to start blooming. Here’s what I’ve found so far:
This is some sort of Daisy, in the Aster family. It […]

New England in the Fall
Friday, October 9th, 2009I’m in the Boston area this weekend to preach at Park St. Church. Had the chance to get up to New Hampshire today. There is nothing like New England in the fall! Not even Texas.
This is New Hampshire.
This is the Texas Hill Country.
And this is New Hampshire, again.
Wow!

New Babies at Home!
Saturday, June 6th, 2009A couple of months ago, our back porch was invaded by a couple of Barn Swallows. They’re colorful birds that build bowl-shaped mud nests. Our invasion force picked our porch for such a nest and we decided to let them go ahead and build.
A few days ago we started hearing high-pitched chirps coming from the […]

More Than Birds in Florida
Thursday, March 12th, 2009During our visit to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in central Florida we saw more than amazing birds. We almost stumbled upon several alligators in a little canal along the road. As we hopped out of the car to see some colorful birds, my wife said, “Hey, look! An alligator!” Gazing down we saw a […]
A Few More Birds in Florida
Wednesday, March 11th, 2009During my sojourn in Florida, I was able to visit Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. It lies along the Atlantic coast of central Florida, about 50 miles due east of Orlando. Among the animals we saw were several birds that I had not seen before, including:
The Great (or American) Egret
The Louisiana (or Tricolor) Heron
Two Spoonbills. […]
Birds in Florida
Tuesday, March 10th, 2009Last week I attended a leadership conference in Florida. Though my schedule was full, I did manage to get an hour to walk along the beach in Naples. I was fascinated by the birds, several species of which I have not seen before.
The picture below shows a Snowy Egret prancing in the surf.
The next photo […]
