“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and to restore the survivors of Israel;
I will give you as a light to the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”  ( Isaiah 49:6)

The people who walked in darkness
      have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness --
      on them light has shined.
(Isaiah 9:2)

An Advent Prayer

How long, O God, is the foe to scoff?
Is the enemy to revile your name forever?
Why do you hold back your hand;
why do you keep your hand in your bosom?
Yet God my King is from of old,
working salvation in the earth.
(Psalm 74:10-12)

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure
you get back.”
(Luke 6:38)

Happy Second Sunday of Advent!

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
    and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
    more than those who watch for the morning,
    more than those who watch for the morning.
Psalm 130:5-6

My daughter and her friends playing Christmas music at my church's Family Christmas Celebration.

So the ransomed of the LORD shall return,
and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain joy and gladness,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Isaiah 51:11

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

A scene from the classic A Charlie Brown Christmas

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The LORD is our righteousness.” Jeremiah 23:5-6

Dr. Seuss's Grinch, who tried in vain to steal Christmas

Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:31-32

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”
Matthew 2:1-2

My daughter singing a solo as "The Donkey" as one of our children's choirs leads us during Lessons and Carols:

"I said," the donkey shaggy and brown,
"I carried his mother up hill and down,
I carried his mother to Bethleham town."

"The ox knows its owner,
     and the donkey its master’s crib;
but Israel does not know,
     my people do not understand."
Isaiah 1:3

My cat joins the Nativity scene on the top of my house today! (No joke.) And, just think, I used to accuse my cat of not being a Christian.

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,
    and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him,
    the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the spirit of counsel and might,
    the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. . . .
The wolf shall live with the lamb,
    the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
    the calf and the lion and the fatling together,
and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze,
    their young shall lie down together;
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
Isaiah 11:1-2, 6-7

From the Christmas pageant of all Christmas pageants, "The Glory of Christmas" at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. The flying angels are astounding. The script is biblical. The music is inspiring.

An angel of the Lord appear to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
Luke 2:9

A scene from the 1954 Christmas classic, White Christmas, starring Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby. Ironically, the song "White Christmas" was first sung by Crosby, not in this movie, but in the 1942 film, Holiday Inn.

Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;
            remove the evil of your doings
            from before my eyes;
cease to do evil,
            learn to do good;
seek justice,
            rescue the oppressed,
defend the orphan,
            plead for the widow.
Come now, let us argue it out,
            says the LORD:
though your sins are like scarlet,
            they shall be like snow;
though they are red like crimson,
            they shall become like wool.
If you are willing and obedient,
            you shall eat the good of the land;
                    Isaiah 1:16-19

Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David.

And she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Today is my son's 12th birthday. He came home from the hospital on Christmas Eve, 1992. The picture was taken moments after he arrived home. What a marvelous Christmas present he was (and is still)!

For unto us a child is born;
    to us a son is given,
    and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

On Christmas Eve my church now has two services for younger children and families. In years past we did one service that featured a living Nativity scene, using some family from the church that had a newborn infant. In 1994 we were chosen, since Kara was seven weeks old. We were pretty nervous about this, however, because Kara always got really cranky at just the time when the service was to be held. We feared that she would cry uncontrollably for the whole time. But, astoundingly, she not only didn't get cranky, but didn't make a peep! And from then on she was cured of evening crankiness. The little Lord Jesus, no crying she makes? Hmmm.

“See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them as their God;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:3-4

Eight years ago on Christmas Eve my children spontaneously joined me for the sermon (see above). From then on they became my teammates for Christmas Eve preaching. Children love Christmas, and they love Jesus. The One who came as a child welcomed children -- and he welcomes them still.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom
of heaven belongs.”
Matthew 19:14

The Nativity scene on my roof. About one-half of life-sized.

O sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done marvelous things.
His right hand and his holy arm
have gotten him victory.
The LORD has made known his victory;
he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the victory of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;
break forth into joyous song and sing praises.
Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre,
with the lyre and the sound of melody.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD.

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
the world and those who live in it.
Let the floods clap their hands;
let the hills sing together for joy
at the presence of the LORD, for he is coming
to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 98
